⭐ Research status: blank slate — the adventure-first alternative
"Rainforest, volcanoes, sloths. 5% of the world's biodiversity in a country the size of Nova Scotia. Swap buffet for a zipline through a cloud forest."
The "we came back changed" option. Costa Rica is different. It's not an all-inclusive destination (though a few exist) — it's a two-week multi-zone adventure country: volcanoes, cloud forests, Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and the planet's densest concentration of wildlife. Abolished its army in 1949 and put the money into conservation and education; tourism infrastructure is mature, English is widely spoken in tourist zones. Michael: craft beer scene is genuinely good (Costa Rica's Volcano Brewing, Craft Brewing Co.). Tova: yoga retreats in Nosara, thermal springs at Tabacón. Charlotte and Cohen: sloths you can see from the resort pool. Monkeys stealing breakfast. Zipline courses that are actually thrilling (not theme-park versions). Active volcano (Arenal was erupting until 2010; Poás still puffs). Surf lessons in Tamarindo if they're up for it. A trip here changes kids. Pura vida is the national phrase and it's lived, not performed.

Dec/Jan = dry season on Pacific side (perfect)

Status: Placeholder. Costa Rica in Dec/Jan is peak dry-season weather on the Pacific side — perfect timing. Reasonable version is 10 nights (too short to do 3 zones in 7). Some US/Canadian airlines run seasonal direct flights to Liberia (LIR, Guanacaste airport).

✈️ Logistics reality

  • WestJet / Air Canada fly YVR → LIR (Guanacaste) seasonal direct — ~8 hrs
  • Otherwise YVR → SJO (San José) via LAX/YYZ, ~10–12 hrs
  • Rental car recommended (4WD for some regions); inter-zone domestic flights available via Sansa
  • No visa for Canadians; colón currency but USD accepted everywhere
  • December is start of dry season on Pacific side (peak tourism); Caribbean side is wetter
  • Most wildlife encounters via guided eco-tours — tip your guide generously
