🏛️ Chichén Itzá Day Trip
One of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Full-day guided tour with cenote swim stop and lunch in colonial Valladolid. ~2.5 hour drive.
Mexico is the default. It's now three region options — Cancún & Riviera Maya (deepest research, 11 resorts below), Los Cabos (desert + Pacific, grey whales, shortest flight), and Riviera Nayarit (Banderas Bay, humpbacks, Puerto Vallarta gateway). Everything below the Mexico trio is a blank-slate alternative — pick any thread to pull.
↓ The rest of this page is the Mexico deep-dive. If the family lands on one of the alternatives, we flip this structure onto that destination instead.
Everything you need to feel smart at dinner parties before we commit to a resort. (For Los Cabos and Riviera Nayarit intel, see their region pages.)
Budget ~CA $200–$400 per person — these will be what you actually remember when the resort pool blurs into every other resort pool
One of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Full-day guided tour with cenote swim stop and lunch in colonial Valladolid. ~2.5 hour drive.
Swim in ancient limestone sinkholes filled with crystal-clear freshwater. The Maya believed cenotes were sacred portals to the underworld. Thousands exist across the Yucatán.
Sail turquoise Caribbean waters to a stunning island. Snorkel coral reefs, beach club lunch, explore the historic centre. Dolphins often swim alongside.
World-class eco-adventure parks: ziplines over jungle canopy, underground river rafting, amphibious vehicles, and snorkelling — all in one day.
Clifftop Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean — one of the most photographed spots in Mexico. Founded ~564 AD. Climb down to the beach below.
Tear through the Mayan jungle on ATVs, then zipline over the canopy, then cool off in a cenote. Teens absolutely love this combo.

* Air Canada Vacations and † WestJet Vacations live quotes, YVR → CUN, Dec 28, 2026 → Jan 4, 2027, 2 adults + 2 children ages 15 and 17. Both are full packages including flight + hotel + airport transfer, taxes & fees included. Snapshot: April 2026. Pattern: ACV is $1,180–$2,500 cheaper than WestJet on every resort we've cross-checked. Always quote both before booking. 📝 New additions: Royalton, Margaritaville, Palladium, Catalonia, and Dreams Puerto Morelos are priced from ACV only — WestJet cross-quotes pending. 🔀 Mixed rating scale: Existing resorts use Booking.com's 10-pt score; the five ACV-native additions use TripAdvisor's 5★ scale. Ballpark conversion: 4.5★ ≈ 9.0, 4.3★ ≈ 8.5, 4.0★ ≈ 8.0. 🗓️ Alt-date savings: WestJet's data shows shifting departure to Dec 29 saves ~$500 per adult ($2K family); Dec 30 saves $1,200+/adult ($5K family). Returning Jan 5 or 6 loses some beach days — worth the math. Dreams at $51K/$54K is almost certainly Preferred Club Family Governor Suite pricing; the Junior Suite tier likely lands in the $20-25K range — check Costco Travel and Expedia directly.
Not researched, not ranked — just ideas on the table in case the 11 above don't feel right. Ping me to pull any thread.
Book now or explain to the family in March why we're spending Spring Break in the rain again
Everyone picks your top 2 from these 11. Cohen will campaign for Planet Hollywood (FlowRider) or Dreams Puerto Morelos (waterpark), Charlotte probably Margaritaville for the vibes and Spanish practice, Tova will vote for whichever lets her read in peace (Catalonia, Hilton), Michael will vote for Hyatt Ziva's microbrewery and pretend it's about "family memories." All valid.
Expedia.ca, Air Canada Vacations, WestJet Vacations, Costco Travel, Sunwing, Booking, Hotels.com, and the hotel direct. We've linked all of them on each resort page. Costco is the sneaky winner on Hyatt properties.
YVR → CUN direct is served by WestJet (17 nonstops/week), Air Canada (15/week), and Flair (budget). ~6 hours. Dec 28 is peak — every week we wait, prices go up and availability shrinks.
Chichén Itzá (non-negotiable), Xcaret/Xplor (teen favourite), Isla Mujeres catamaran (dolphins, allegedly). Book after hotel confirmed — many hotels sell them at similar prices.
Check passport expiry — Mexico requires 6+ months validity from entry date. No one wants to be the family that drove to YVR and got turned around at the gate.
Gus, Martha, and Reggie are not coming. Someone needs to be designated household chaos-mitigator. Start asking now — January is peak pet-sitting season.
