"The all-inclusive capital of the Caribbean. Same formula as Cancún, usually 20–30% cheaper."
The budget-conscious pivot from Cancún. Punta Cana's all-inclusive market is denser and generally cheaper than Cancún's — same wristband formula, same buffet-plus-à-la-carte structure, often with better beaches (34 km of Bavaro white sand). The trade-off: no YVR direct, longer flight, less English spoken, and some resort areas feel more isolated (fewer off-resort excursion options nearby). Michael: Mamajuana is the local drink; some resorts brew it correctly. Tova: the beaches genuinely are excellent. Charlotte and Cohen: Scape Park / Hoyo Azul cenote, zipline over reefs, swim with dolphins — similar to Cancún excursion menu.

✈️ Logistics reality

  • No YVR direct — typically YVR → Toronto or YYZ → PUJ (Punta Cana)
  • Spanish is the official language; most resort staff speak English
  • Dominican peso + USD both accepted; USD widely preferred
  • Passport required, no visa for Canadians (tourist card at entry)
  • Tourism infrastructure is mature — no rougher than Cancún
