Edmonton

⭐ Research status: blank slate β€” but West Edmonton Mall is a fact, not a metaphor
"You wanted a waterpark? The World Waterpark has 17 slides, an indoor wave pool, and is indoors. It's January. You do the math."
Stay with us here. Edmonton in late December / early January is βˆ’30Β°C with wind chill, dark before 5 PM, and genuinely one of the coldest major cities in the world. This is also the pitch: North America's largest mall, entirely indoors, containing a waterpark (28Β°C year-round), an actual amusement park (Galaxyland), an NHL-sized skating rink, an aquarium with sea lions, a 19-hole mini-golf course, and a replica Santa Maria ship in a lagoon. You can check into the Fantasyland Hotel in a themed suite (Truck Room, Igloo Room, Polynesian Room, Arabian Room β€” most of them predate 1995 and have not been renovated with conviction) and literally never go outside. The entire trip, for a family of 4, costs less than one CancΓΊn flight. Also: Ice on Whyte sculpture festival, a Jasper day trip (3.5 hrs), the Royal Alberta Museum, hockey game if the Oilers are in town. Cohen will love it. Charlotte will tolerate it. Tova and Michael will tell this story forever.

Status: Placeholder. Also the cheapest option on this site by a factor of 4. Genuinely a reasonable domestic trip if we want to save money and have a story. The Fantasyland Hotel Truck Room has a bed inside the back of a half-ton pickup. This is real.

🏨 Hotel options (ranked seriously)

  • Fantasyland Hotel: attached to WEM β€” Truck, Hollywood, Polynesian, Arabian, Igloo themed suites. Peak Canadiana. Charlotte will photograph everything ironically. Cohen will be delighted unironically.
  • JW Marriott ICE District: luxury downtown, Rogers Place arena connected, Oilers game-ready
  • Fairmont Hotel Macdonald: 1915 railway hotel, old-school Canadian grand, river views
  • Hyatt Place WEM: attached to WEM, cheaper than Fantasyland, less thematic
  • Courtyard/Holiday Inn WEM: budget-friendly, still mall-connected

🧊 Activities (they're real)

  • World Waterpark: 17 slides, wave pool, 28Β°C indoors while it's βˆ’30Β°C outside
  • Galaxyland: indoor amusement park β€” Mindbender triple-loop coaster (formerly world's largest)
  • Ice on Whyte Festival: ice sculpture festival, late Jan (may overlap)
  • Oilers game at Rogers Place: peak Canadiana; $150–400/seat for a family of 4
  • Jasper day trip: 3.5-hr drive, Columbia Icefield, dark-sky reserve
  • Royal Alberta Museum: dinosaur collection, Indigenous history, worth an afternoon
  • Old Strathcona farmers' market + Whyte Ave: actually lovely, best brunch in the city
  • Fort Edmonton Park: seasonal but winter-open β€” historic village by river

βœ… Genuine pros

  • Cheapest serious-vacation option here by a wide margin
  • Direct flight, 1.5 hours, no visa, no time zone drama
  • Waterpark and amusement park and hotel in one building β€” rain/cold-proof
  • The story is undefeated: "we spent New Year's at the Fantasyland Hotel in the Truck Room"
  • Dogs can fly with us domestically if we're feeling ambitious
  • Alberta has no provincial sales tax

⚠️ Genuine cons

  • It is, and cannot be overstated, βˆ’30Β°C with wind chill
  • Charlotte and Cohen have lived in Vancouver β€” they will lose their minds at real winter
  • WEM is a mall. A very large mall. But still a mall.
  • Fantasyland Hotel themed rooms are a commitment to bits; some are dated
  • You will be asked "but… why?" at dinner parties for the next five years
  • No beach. No ocean. No sargassum. No palm trees. Just a lot of Tim Hortons.
