⭐ Research status: blank slate — genuinely great in winter
"Snow on temple roofs in Kyoto. Ramen at 1 AM in a Tokyo alley. Cohen discovers arcades are a religion here. Charlotte's Spanish will not help, but she'll bow with confidence."
The "actually we should do this one" option that gets surprisingly good as a winter destination. Late December / early January is cold in Tokyo (2–10°C) but dry and clear — snow dusts the temples of Kyoto with unreal Instagram-ability, the ski season in Hokkaido / Niseko is in full swing (the powder is genuinely the best in the world — yes, better than Whistler), and Japanese New Year (Oshōgatsu) is a cultural experience in its own right (shrines packed, hatsuhinode sunrise watching, osechi-ryōri special foods). Michael: sake tastings, whisky distilleries (Yamazaki, Nikka), the best-in-the-world beef (A5 wagyu), kaiseki meals, an entire food floor in every department store. Tova: tea ceremony, zen gardens, temple-run through Kyoto's Philosopher's Path. Charlotte: Harajuku, Shibuya Crossing, a million conbini (convenience stores) each better than the last. Cohen: Akihabara electronics district, Pokémon Café, arcades, actual giant robot statues.

Tokyo winter (dry, clear, crisp)

Status: Placeholder. Japan in late December / early January means you catch illuminations (winter light festivals), Oshōgatsu, and snow festivals starting up. 10-night trip feels right; 7 nights is tight.

✈️ Logistics reality

  • YVR → HND (Haneda, central Tokyo) ~10 hrs nonstop — ANA, JAL, Air Canada
  • Shinkansen bullet train is a national treasure — Japan Rail Pass is $400–700/person but pays off on multi-city trips
  • No visa needed for Canadians (90-day visa-free)
  • Cash still important — some restaurants/ryokans are cash-only; ATMs at 7-Eleven work with foreign cards
  • Google Translate offline mode works well; menu photos save you from ordering intestine by accident
  • Oshōgatsu (Jan 1–3): many restaurants/shops closed; shrines mobbed — plan accordingly

  • Ryokan night: traditional inn stay, tatami rooms, kaiseki dinner, onsen soak — book Hakone or Hakone-Yumoto

  • Family mid-tier: Prince Hotels, MIMARU (apartment-style), Granbell Hotels
