Las Vegas

πŸ“ Nevada Β· The Strip Β· Fremont Β· Red Rock Canyon Β· Grand Canyon (2hr day trip)
⭐ Research status: blank slate β€” the wildcard pick
"Yes, seriously. Cirque du Soleil every night. Grand Canyon helicopter tour. Charlotte and Cohen see a volcano erupt on demand outside the Mirage."
Hear us out on this one too. Las Vegas has a genuine family-vacation layer underneath the casino-tourism reputation. The Strip resorts are the best value hotel rooms in North America for their class (you'll pay $150/night for what would cost $600 in NYC because they want you at the slots), the Cirque du Soleil residencies are legitimately world-class, and within 90 minutes of the Strip is: the Grand Canyon West Rim + Skywalk, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Death Valley, Hoover Dam, and the Mojave Desert. Michael: every celebrity chef has a restaurant here; a Gordon Ramsay steakhouse and a JoΓ«l Robuchon tasting menu are both walking distance. Tova: spa scene is absurd (Qua at Caesars, The Spa at Aria); Shakespeare at the Smith Center is a thing. Charlotte: Sphere shows (immersive concerts in the giant orb), Adventuredome indoor amusement park. Cohen: Battlefield Vegas (shoot actual tanks), High Roller observation wheel, Gondola rides at the Venetian. NYE on the Strip is a big American street party; alternative is Fremont Street if you want less of a crowd. Add a 2-day Grand Canyon road trip and this becomes a genuine family trip, not just a bachelor party with better outcomes.

Status: Placeholder, but Vegas NYE is a specific kind of trip β€” street parties of 400,000 people on the Strip with fireworks from the rooftops of multiple casinos simultaneously. Either that's the dream or that's the nightmare; know which one before you book.

✈️ Logistics reality

  • YVR β†’ LAS nonstop, ~2.5 hrs, WestJet + Air Canada + Flair
  • No visa for Canadians; US domestic feel
  • Rental car NOT required β€” Strip is walkable, Uber/Lyft cheap, monorail connects major casinos
  • For Grand Canyon day trip: rental car (~5 hrs round-trip West Rim) or helicopter ($400–600/person)
  • NYE: Strip closed to cars from ~5 PM Dec 31; buy Strip fireworks tickets in advance ($50–200/person)
  • Resort fees ($30–50/night extra) are the local tax β€” budget for them

🎰 Hotel shortlist (family-friendly edition)

  • The Venetian / Palazzo β€” all suites, gondola, Grand Canal Shoppes, non-smoking hotel tower
  • Aria β€” modern, best spa on Strip, tech-forward rooms
  • Bellagio β€” fountains show, Cirque's O, Conservatory gardens
  • Four Seasons (top floors of Mandalay Bay) β€” non-casino luxury, private entrance
  • New York-New York β€” for kids; Manhattan-theme, The Big Apple Coaster goes right through the building
  • Paris Las Vegas β€” Eiffel Tower experience, French bakeries, whimsical
  • Wynn / Encore β€” upscale, less kid-forward but excellent service

πŸŽͺ Actual family-friendly things to do

  • Sphere shows β€” U2/Postcard From Earth/concert residencies in a fully immersive 18,000-seat orb
  • Cirque du Soleil β€” 7 permanent shows ($ O, KA, MystΓ¨re, Michael Jackson ONE, etc.)
  • Grand Canyon West Rim β€” 2-hr drive, Skywalk glass bridge over the canyon
  • Hoover Dam tour β€” 45-min drive, dam tours + Lake Mead
  • Red Rock Canyon β€” 30-min drive, hiking + scenic drive loop
  • Adventuredome at Circus Circus β€” indoor amusement park (free admission, pay per ride)
  • Fountains of Bellagio β€” free, every 15 mins, genuinely great
  • High Roller ferris wheel β€” 30 mins, 550 ft up, cocktail cabin option

⚠️ Reality checks

  • Strip is smoky inside casinos β€” resort lobbies are unavoidable
  • Walking the Strip is surprisingly far; pedestrian bridges + escalators save you from streets
  • Kids can't enter casino floors unescorted; plan routes accordingly
  • NYE: 400k people on the Strip can be genuinely overwhelming for teens (Charlotte will be fine, Cohen might struggle)
  • Prices jump 50–100% over NYE week β€” book early or wait for a price drop
  • Nothing about Vegas feels like a "relaxing vacation" β€” it's high-stimulation on purpose
