🐕 The Dog Option

Stay Home with the Dogs

📍 Vancouver, BC · YVR transfer: 0 minutes · Your couch
⭐ TripAdvisor rating: 5/5 by Gus, Martha, and Reggie (verified reviewers, biased)
"The beach is cold and made of rocks. The staff is three dogs and they don't speak English. Nobody checks your wristband because you're not wearing one."
Hear us out. While the rest of Canada is ziplining over cenotes at $110 a head, you could be drinking a coffee you made yourself, wearing pants you've owned since 2019, watching Gus try to dig a hole in the yard that leads directly to the Yucatán. Michael: the microbrewery in the Hyatt Ziva Cancún costs $16,000 to access; your own kitchen costs zero. Tova: reading in peace is free, the Kindle works identically in both climates, nobody claims the lounger next to you at 7 AM. Charlotte and Cohen: video games hit harder when everyone else is on a plane. The dogs: they already voted and it was unanimous. They would like the vote to stand.

Status: This is a humour placeholder, but the savings are real. Skipping Mexico = ~$14k in the pocket. Spend $500 on one absurd dinner at Hawksworth, $200 on a dog-friendly day at Iona Beach, and you still come out $13,300 ahead.

🐶 Activities & Excursions

  • Jericho off-leash dog park — sandy-adjacent, ocean views, "beach" adjacent to ocean in the legal sense
  • Pacific Spirit Regional Park — hours of trails, free, comes with seasonal mushrooms Gus will try to eat
  • Stanley Park seawall — walk all 10 km pretending you're on Playa Mujeres, just colder and with herons
  • Iona Beach Regional Park — planes from YVR overhead as aspirational content, dogs allowed on leash
  • Kitsilano Showboat — locked up for winter but a great spot to feel dramatic about life choices
  • Lynn Canyon suspension bridge — free alternative to Capilano, soggier in December

🏠 "Resort" amenities

  • Multiple dining outlets: kitchen, living room couch, bedroom, bathroom (emergencies only)
  • 24-hour room service: you, to you
  • Kids' club: Charlotte and Cohen's bedrooms; unsupervised; wifi included
  • Fitness centre: optional; deeply optional
  • Entertainment program: Netflix, the Canucks, an ongoing argument about the thermostat
  • Spa: your shower, which also works
  • Dog wing: Gus, Martha, and Reggie — concierge-level enthusiasm at all hours

✅ Genuine pros

  • Save ~$14,000 vs. Cancún baseline — real money, real savings
  • No pet-sitter needed (and January pet-sitting demand is brutal)
  • Zero travel days — full 7 days of actual vacation
  • Sleep in your own bed — criminally underrated
  • Grocery store = buffet with no queue
  • If you get sick, it's at home where you have soup

⚠️ Genuine cons

  • It's rainy and 4°C and dark by 4:30 PM — this is the actual reason people go to Cancún
  • No one will envy your holiday photos of Gus lying on a damp deck
  • You'll do laundry. You'll cook. The spell of "vacation" breaks after day 2
  • Charlotte and Cohen will ask "so when are we going somewhere?" within 72 hours
  • Risk of "we could have been in Cancún right now" retrospective for the next 11 months
